Richard obtained a degree in Microbiology from the University of Wales College of Cardiff, before completing a PhD. in virology at the University of Wales College of Medicine. Following 6 years of post-doctoral research, he is now a lecturer in the School of Medicine at Cardiff University. He teaches bacteriology, parasitology and virology to undergraduate medical students and carries out research into Adenovirus vectors and the herpes virus human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). His major research interests are studying the genetics of HCMV strain variation, understanding how HCMV virion proteins relate to tropism and vaccination strategies, and understanding how HCMV avoids detection by the human immune system. Richard is involved in several widening access and public outreach schemes in the School of Medicine. He is keen to communicate science to the broader public and to have new opportunities for collaboration.

Richard has been promoted to Reader in the School of Medicine at Cardiff University.
