Sophie graduated from the University of Oregon with a PhD in Mathematics in 2000. After a short stint at the Open University, she joined the University of Cambridge as a Cambridge-MIT fellow in 2002. In 2006 she was awarded an EPSRC Advanced Research Fellowship, and in 2011 she joined Swansea University as a senior lecturer in Physics. She has also held visiting positions abroad including a Marie Curie Visiting Professorship at the University of Kuopio in 2008 and as a KITP visiting scientist at UCSB. Her research is multi-disciplinary with a strong focus on the EPSRC Grand Challenge area of Quantum Physics for New Quantum Technologies. She has ongoing collaborations with engineering and computer science and her current aim is to establish new collaborations with biology and medicine to explore the application of quantum control techniques in medical imaging and the role of quantum effects in biological processes.
Sophie has been promoted to Associate Professor in Physics in the College of Science at Swansea University.
